My Girl was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White and was a hit for The Temptations in 1964. My Girl was The Temptations first US number 1 hit and 2017 was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. Over the years My Girl has become one of Motown’s signature songs and continues to be a very popular song.

How To Play My Girl FingerstylE Tab

1. Learn The Chords To My Girl FINGERSTYLE

It’ll help if you know the chords to My Girl before you learn my fingerstyle arrangement. Your hand will be familiar with some of the shapes you’ll be using and it’s a fun way to start playing the song.

All the chords are written above the tab on my fingerstyle version. However, if you don’t know the chord position a chord diagram is included at the start of the fingerstyle tab.

2. Start With The Beginner Version Of My Girl FINGERSTYLE

Unless you’re confident with fingerstyle guitar it’s always best to start with the beginner versions of my songs. They’re simplified versions of my full arrangements and will help you move to the full version later.

3. Use The Chord Shapes To Help Find Your Hand Position

A lot of My Girl uses a riff based on C major and F major chords. With the C major riff you want use the chord finger position to help you play it. For example, use you third finger on the third fret on the A string. Use your second finger to play the second fret on the D and the G string. Finally, use your first finger to play the first fret on the B string.

Try and keep your first and third finger down and in position while you play the whole riff.

4. How To Play The Chords In The My Girl pre Chorus

During the pre chorus of My Girl you switch to playing just the chords. The rhythm I’ve written matches the song but feel free to experiment with this section. You could try strumming this section and find your own rhythm to play.

5. How To Play The Palm Mutes In My Girl Fingerstyle Arrangement

A big part of this fingerstyle arrangement includes muted strings. The tab says you should play the palm mutes on the top three strings. You can actually play the mutes whichever way you find it easiest. Some people prefer to play the mutes just on the top string.
